In 1986, thrash-metal was in full swing, but Candlemass wanted to go low and slow; a choice that would pay cultural dividends for decades to come. The band’s transformative debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, was the greatest record to emerge from a small cadre of bands — including Saint Vitus and Pentagram — who knew there was more meat on the bones of Black Sabbath’s dirge-y plods. Candlemass’ first — and, until 2019’s the Door to Doom, only — album with singer Johan Längquist remains a doom-metal essential.
