‘A Curious Thing’ is the fantastic sophomore album from 22 year old Scottish singer-songwriter Amy Macdonald. It is the follow-up to her 2007 debut album ‘This Is The Life’ which has sold 3 million copies worldwide, achieving multi-platinum or platinum status in 12 countries (over 800,000 in the UK). Debuting at #2 in the UK album chart, ‘This Is The Life’ reached #1 6 months later when it knocked Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ from thetop spot in January 2008. This was driven by promotion for title track of the album which went on to top the singles chart in 10 countries.r
r
‘A Curious Thing’ retains the earthy roots of the ‘This Is The Life’ but boasts more epic production and a greater breadth of styles.r
r
This is evident in the incredible first single ‘Don’t Tell Me That It’s Over’ which was launched on 11th January when Macdonald performed it live on the first show of Simon Mayo’s new drivetime slot on Radio 2. This was a statement of intent as the station went on to bestow its hallowed ‘Record Of The Week’ status to the single 6 weeks before album release and then immediately it added to their A-list. Absolute Radio also playlisted the single early (8 weeks pre-album), and other commercial radio stations across Scotland and the North of England are quickly following suit.r
r
A key cornerstone of Macdonald’s success to date has been her live performances. She started playing acoustic shows at 15 and has now played to over half a million fans worldwide. So it was only fitting that she showcase tracks from her new album at a string of European live launch shows, including ICA in London and her beloved Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow. (Having always lived locally, she played her first headline show there in December 2007 with a blistering set including the album track ‘Barrowlands’). The last of the shows in Berlin will be streamed live on the internet to add to the building anticipation for the new album.r
r
Macdonald has also announced a small UK Spring tour (see below) and will be back out on the road for a full autumn tour after a summer packed with festival appearances in UK and Europe.r
